Job Introduction

About Us

Would you like to make Oxfordshire a safer place for businesses and consumers? If you have great communication skills, work well under pressure and are determined with good attention to detail, then a career in trading standards could be perfect for you.

Working in Trading Standards is interesting and varied, and no two days are the same. Some examples of the work we do include;

  • Stopping businesses selling alcohol, cigarettes or vapes to children
  • Checking up on local shops and businesses (sometimes undercover)
  • Looking for unsafe products that shouldn’t be for sale
  • Ensuring vulnerable people are not victims of scams
  • Checking that food and drink labels are accurate and not misleading
  • Checking that products are not sold under weight or short measured
  • Regulatory enforcement and surveillance

About the Role

Are you looking for a career in Trading Standards?  Oxfordshire Trading Standards are looking for an Enforcement Assistant.

  • The role involves providing administrative support including intelligence data processing and research to support the Trading Standards team.
  • The role also provides practical operational support to ensure that it can carry it's functions and that operational equipment is ready for use.
  • It involves communicating with business, consumers, residents, other agencies and arms of the authority in person, by telephone,  letter and email and also undertaking basic investigation and regulatory activities under supervision.
  • Whilst this post is not an apprenticeship, a range of potential apprenticeships may be available to the successful candidate, including L4 apprenticeships in Regulatory Compliance Officer, Intelligence Analysis and Data Analyst.
  • Please demonstrate how you meet the shortlisting criteria and the criteria in the job description in your application.

About you

You must be comfortable with working around farm animals, in different environments and be able to communicate assertively with both members of the public, other agencies and some of which may be in confrontational circumstances. You should be able to work alone and use your own initiative, but also as part of a team.  You should have an eye for detail and have good record keeping, but also be able to understand and interpret potentially complex legislation. If you have relevant experience or qualification, this ideal, but not essential, however, you must be willing to complete formal qualifications.

Rewards and benefits

The council offer some of the best learning and development opportunities to support you and your ongoing development. We offer a generous holiday allowance which rises as you remain in employment as well as giving you the option to buy additional holiday.

You will also have access to a Local Government Pension Scheme; a range of local and national retail discounts; and a host of enhanced family friendly policies.
